US House passes Quad bill: What does it mean for India?


The Quad bill, which instructed the Biden administration to establish a Quad Intra-Parliamentary Working Group to foster closer cooperation among the US, Australia, India, and Japan, was passed by the US House of Representatives. It passed by a roll call vote of 379 to 39. The bill, known as the ‘Strengthen US-Australia-India-Japan Cooperation’ or the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) bill, aimed to enhance joint cooperation between these nations. It directed the State Department to submit a strategy to Congress within 180 days of the bill’s enactment for increased engagement with the Quad. Additionally, within 60 days of its enactment, negotiations were to be initiated with Japan, Australia, and India to establish a Quad Intra-Parliamentary Working Group to facilitate closer cooperation.
