Trolley track work begins for the KC Streetcar extension


Construction began this week on the partial relocation of the Harry Wiggins Trolley Track. The track work is the one of the first major projects related to the KC Streetcar Main Street extension.The Trolley Trail located between 49th Street and 51st Street will be relocated approximately 20-feet to the east of the existing trail. During construction, trail users will be detoured into a barrier-protected space on Brookside Boulevard. This detour is anticipated to last through April. In January the KC Streetcar Authority took the delivery of nearly 700 tons of rail, all dedicated to the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension.This phase of the pre-construction will include the creation of a retaining wall, new trail section and the demolition of the existing trail. The new, relocated section of the trail will be ten feet wide and constructed of poured concrete. The realignment of the trail will also make room for a temporary southern rail yard where streetcar rail will be delivered and stored beginning in spring 2022. The KC Streetcar will continue to remain open throughout construction. Official groundbreaking for the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension is anticipated in April 2022. The construction of the project is estimated to be open to the public in 2025.
