Townsend fire kills one person, hospitalizes another on Gum Rush Road



A fire in Townsend caused severe damage to a home, seriously injured one occupant and claimed the life of another Saturday night.

The Townsend Fire Company responded to the 500 block of Gum Rush Road after receiving a report of a fire shortly after 11 p.m., the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office, reported. Firefighters found flames shooting from a one-story house and one person trapped inside. 

They rescued the person who was trapped and transported them to Christiana Care-Middletown Emergency Department where they were pronounced dead. Information regarding their identity is being withheld.

A second person was taken to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition suffering from smoke inhalation. 

State fire investigators are investigating the fire’s origin and cause. They said heavy fire damage was estimated at $100,000.
