Police: Man wanted for bringing gun to Petersburg hospital, lockdown lifted


PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — The Petersburg Bureau of Police has identified the man accused of having brought a gun to Bon Secours Medial Center in Petersburg Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to the hospital located in the 200 block of Medical Park Boulevard around 4:45 p.m. for a report of a person with a gun. An 8News crew member at the scene witnessed a group of officers chasing a man into a wooded area near the hospital.

The facility was placed on lockdown shortly after police arrived. The lockdown was lifted around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, but hospital staff said they were continuing to work closely with local authorities.

“The safety, security and well-being of our patients, associates and community is a top priority for Bon Secours,” a Bon Secours spokesperson said Tuesday morning. “Late yesterday afternoon, Bon Secours Southside Medical Center was made aware of a suspicious individual making violent threats against the hospital. This individual was immediately removed from the premises and since then, we have been working closely with Petersburg Police and have increased our security presence.”

Investigators have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Rasheem Anthony Beam. Police said he is wanted on multiple charges related to the hospital incident.

Police warn that anyone who sees Beam should not approach and instead dial 911.
