Police: 74-year-old man killed by police after firing gun in Hopewell neighborhood

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — Police are investigating a deadly shooting in which a Hopewell man was killed by officers Wednesday night.

The Hopewell Police Department said officers were called to the 2700 block of Gordon Street Wednesday, Aug. 31, for the report of a man with a gun actively firing shots. Upon arrival, officers found Berkley Lee Collins Jr., 74, of Hopewell, holding two guns.

The police department said officers at the scene gave “clear and concise verbal commands” to try to de-escalate the situation, but said Collins refused to comply. As the officers continued to give verbal commands to Collins, police said he shot his gun, “forcing the officers to return fire.”

After, police said the officers immediately began attempting lifesaving measures, but Collins was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the shooting.
