‘Oil-like substance’ found in Reedy Creek in Richmond, Fire Marshal investigating


RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — After an “oil-like substance” was found in a part of Reedy Creek Thursday evening, the Richmond Fire Marshal is investigating.

At 4:14 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, officers with the Richmond Police Department were called to the 800 block of West 44th Street for the report of an unknown substance in Reedy Creek.

When officers arrived, they found an “oil-like substance” in the creek, according to police.

The Richmond Fire Department was then called and its Hazardous Materials Team responded to assist with the investigation.

A crew from HEPACO, a clean-up company specializing in possibly hazardous materials, then responded to clean the area.

8News talked to a spokesperson for HEPACO, who said the substance is believed to be gallons of transmission fluid.

The crew reportedly cleaned up most of the spill.

8News also reached out to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, but are waiting for a response from both agencies.

This incident is being investigated by the Fire Marshal, according to police.
