RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A community prayer vigil was held in honor and remembrance for a 19-year-old man who was shot and killed in Richmond.
A prayer vigil was held on Sunday, March 3, in honor of 19-year-old Trimaine Reed, of Richmond, who was shot and killed in the city’s East End on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
On Feb. 20, Richmond Police officers received a report at around 8 p.m. that two people had arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim, identified as Reed, died from his injuries, while the other, and unidentified juvenile male, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The juvenile who suffered non-life-threatening injuries spoke about Reed at Sunday night’s prayer vigil.
“Everywhere he go, I was there,” he said. “Now, I’m out in the world by myself and he’s not there… can’t call him to come outside… none of that.”
8News learned that Reed, and the juvenile that accompanied him that night, had just attended the Z-Life program at the Peter Paul Coleman Promise Center. The program is geared towards supporting young adults by increasing access to employment and providing mentorships.
Reed’s parents declined to speak publicly as they continued to grieve the loss of their son.
Community members, city and church leaders joined in on a call to action at the vigil to end gun violence in the city.
“I don’t know about nobody else, but I’m tired of it, because every time this happens to one of my Black kids, it happens to me as a mother,” said Pastor Valerie Coley of Divine Covering Ministries.
Tavares Floyd, liaison for Councilmember Ellen F. Robertson, called for more love in the world, instead of violence.
“If I could say anything to you today, I’m going to say, let’s love each other, let’s get it right…we got to get it right,” Floyd said.
Funeral services for Reed will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4 at Mimms Funeral Home.
