Henrico triple shooting suspect dead after police standoff in North Carolina

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WRIC) — The suspect in a Henrico triple shooting is dead after a standoff-turned-shootout with sheriff’s deputies in North Carolina.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday morning that Tiye Washington II, who was sought by Henrico Police in connection with a triple shooting earlier this week, has died after a standoff with sheriff’s deputies turned violent.

The sheriff’s office has not yet confirmed how Washington died, but at least one deputy was taken to the hospital after he was shot during an exchange of gunfire.

Rutherford County resident Julie Nutters recalled waking up to helicopters and armed cars.

“I didn’t see anything but I heard a lot of shots and a lot of yelling,” she said. “We heard more bullets shooting. And then within about 10 minutes we heard a barrage of bullets. So we both got up and went to windows, looking out to see what we could see.”

The Henrico County Police Department extended their thoughts to the deputy who was injured in Rutherford.

“The Henrico County Police Division extends our thoughts to the entire family during these tragic developments, and our thoughts are with the injured deputy, his family, and the agency as they work to keep their community safe alike,” said Lt. Matthew Pecka with Henrico Police.

Washington was wanted by Henrico Police after a shooting Tuesday night in Fairfield injured three, including a minor.

On Tuesday, police said they believed the shooting was a domestic incident. At the time, the victims — two women and a child — were left with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not officially released the identities of the victims, but neighbors told 8News that the victims in the shooting were Washington’s mother and two of his siblings.

Rutherford County sheriff’s deputies found Washington’s car on Wednesday but were unable to locate Washington himself until sometime later that night or early this morning.
