Drink in the history of Lewes, along with a cocktail, at a Sussex County town tavern that’s opened the first Friday of every month.
The Sussex Tavern at the Rabbit’s Ferry House on the downtown Lewes Historical Society’s campus at 110 Shipcarpenter St. is hosting a “historic happy hour” Friday, March 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.
The tavern, located in the house which dates back to about 1740, will be serving a selection of period drinks such as Milk Punch, a dairy-based drink spiked with either bourbon or brandy; Grog, a rum cocktail popular with sailors, and Sangaree, a sweetened punch that dates back to the late 1700s. Visitors also can belly up to the bar for a cold pint.
The Rabbit’s Ferry House is considered an outstanding example of rural Sussex County architecture, according to the Lewes Historical Society, and the reflects the life of southern Delaware’s 18th-century farmers.

Interpreters wearing period clothing will be on hand to talk about Lewes’ rich history and share stories about ales and other drinks served over the years. Guest musicians are the Blarney Pilgrims.
If it’s a cool evening, the fire pit on the campus will be lit.
The Sussex Tavern is available for private parties and group gatherings. There is a 25-person minimum for a booking. Visit historiclewes.org for more information.
