Chrysler recalls over 331,000 SUVs

Chrysler is recalling more than 331,000 of its Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles because rear coil springs may have been incorrectly installed, which can cause the springs to detach while driving, officials said.

The recall covers certain 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs – a total of 331,401 vehicles – the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a news release Monday.

“Rear coil springs that detach from the vehicle while driving increases the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA said in the release. “Dealers will inspect and if necessary, repair the rear coil spring assemblies, free of charge.”

Chrysler will mail notification letters to owners of these vehicles by July 28, 2023. Stellantis estimates that 13% of the vehicles under recall are defected.

How to check if your vehicle is under recall

Car owners can check USA TODAY’s automotive recall database or search NHTSA’s database for new recalls. The NHTSA website also allows you to search for recalls based on your vehicle identification number, or VIN.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs recalled last month for assembly, airbag issues

Chrysler recalled these same vehicles last month because an incorrectly assembled steering column intermediate shaft could disconnect from the u-joint, and result in a loss of steering control, the NHTSA said.
