A child was found dead after a mattress fire inside a rowhome in southwest Baltimore, officials said.According to Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark, crews were called around 6 p.m. Friday to a fire in the 4700 block of Vancouver Road. Clark said a child between the ages of 3 and 4 was found dead at the scene. A neighbor told 11 News she didn’t see any flames or smoke, but she did smell a strange odor in the air. She said she knew of someone living in that rowhome and would see their kids playing outside all of the time, but did not personally know them.”It’s terrible that it was a child — that it was anybody, let alone a child who didn’t even have a chance to live their life yet. It’s just terrible,” the neighbor said.The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office, Clark said.The fire is under investigation.
