Ashland Police Department seeks community’s help in solving 22-year-old cold case

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Ashland Police Department is once again calling on the community for help in solving a homicide investigation now reaching 22 years as a cold case.

Ashland Police investigators believe someone broke into 58-year-old Truman Stanley’s home, located in the 500 block of North James Street in Ashland, between 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 25, 2002 and 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 26, 2002. A neighbor found Stanley, an Army veteran, dead in his home.

Stanley was beaten and stabbed multiple times. Officials believe someone ransacked his home.

“The investigators believe that it’s somebody that targeted him for a robbery,” said Captain James Shelhorse of the Ashland Police Department. “He was out the night before playing pool and dropped off by a friend. And that was the last time he was seen, and that was around 10:30 at night.”

Officials have received tips, one as recent as earlier this week, but are continuing to ask for the public’s help to provide any details regarding this incident — no matter how small.

“There’s always going to be information out there — there’s always going to be someone who finally comes forward,” Captain Shelhorse said. “There’s always going to be some new technological process that we can use to bring some justice to this family and bring them some relief from their grief.”
