weather forecast snow accumulation: Maryland, Virginia, Delaware


Delmarva’s first snow of 2022 is coming Monday, according to weather forecasters, which could impact the morning commute.

The amount of snow predicted varies, and the National Weather Service says there are likely to be further changes, potentially significant, to their forecast. 

The highest snow amounts are expected along and north of the Salisbury line, the weather service tweeted at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Snow will begin around daybreak Monday and last into the midday or afternoon hours. A hard freeze and black ice are likely Monday night.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, they’re calling for 4-8 inches of snow throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, with lower amounts likely in northern Delaware, on the coast and in Virginia. 

Most of New Castle County, including Wilmington, is expected to see 1-3 inches.

There’s potential for higher amounts of snow in central and western Sussex County, according to the National Weather Service.

Other forecasting agencies are calling for up to a foot of snow in central Delmarva, in parts of Sussex, Wicomico and Dorchester counties.

Multiple counties, including Sussex and Kent in Delaware and Wicomico, Somerset and Dorchester counties in Maryland are under a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service. Sussex and Kent are also under a coastal flood watch.

The unseasonably warm temperatures Sunday will drop drastically overnight, from the 60s to the 30s. Winds 20-30 miles per hour are expected, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour on the coast.

The National Weather Service is predicting up to 8 inches of snow in some parts of Delaware on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.

Rain is expected to turn to snow Monday morning, making for hazardous driving conditions during the morning commute. 

Precipitation is predicted to clear up by Monday night. Tuesday is expected to be sunny, but the cold and wind will remain.
