RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Super Tuesday has arrived! Today, voters across 16 states will make their way to the polls to cast their ballots in the presidential primary contest.
Voters in Virginia are given the choice of whether they wish to vote in the Democratic or Republican primaries.
The primary elections will determine which candidates from each party will appear on the ballots for the 2024 presidential election happening on Nov. 5, 2024. Super Tuesday will be the largest day of voting of the year outside of the November election.
When Virginia voters arrive at their polling place they will be presented with a ballot which — depending on their party choice — will have a list of presidential candidates.
Former president Donald Trump is facing off against former South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley for the Republican spot.
Trump is aiming to secure his role as the Republican frontrunner while Haley tries to maintain momentum after recently winning her first primary election in Washington D.C. The former president has been winning a large number of primary contests since kicking off his campaign. According to data collected from polls, he is expected to continue that momentum through Tuesday.
Whichever candidate becomes the Republican nominee will eventually face off against the candidate who wins the Democratic nomination — with President Joe Biden as a clear frontrunner over Minnesota Congressman Dean Philips.
There is also more than a third of the total party delegates currently up for grabs for both parties. Onthe Republican side, 854 of 2,429 delegates and on the Democrat side 1,420 delegates.
