RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has joined a 27-state coalition which is condemning the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for expanding regulations on the meat and dairy industries.
According to Miyares’ office, the EPA only regulates 171 of the United States’ 5,055 meat processing facilities. A new rule form the agency would expand its jurisdiction to 3,879 facilities.
The Attorneys General who have joined the coalition signed a letter which argues that this expansion exceeds the EPA’s authority under the Clean Water Act, and that the new regulations pose the potential to have “significant economic impacts on businesses and consumers.”
“The Biden administration continues to try and find ways to expand its authority by sidestepping Congress and the American people. This latest attempt would cripple small meat and poultry processing plants, imposing heavy new regulatory costs and hurting rural America,” Miyares said in a release.
