Virginia Cavaliers lost 55-73 in Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament against Villanova

PENNSYLVANIA (WRIC) — The University of Virginia Cavaliers lost by nearly 20 points to the Villanova University Wildcats in the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) on Sunday with a final score of 55-73.

At 2 p.m., the No. 4 seeded Cavaliers met the No. 1 seeded Wildcats on Villanova’s home court at the Finneran Pavilion in Pennsylvania Sunday, March 24, for the second-round WBIT match.

The Cavaliers held pace with the Wildcats in the first quarter, though they were never able to take the lead. Things quickly took a downward turn for the Cavaliers, with the divide between the two teams reaching a 24-point high.

The Wildcats managed significantly more defensive rebounds than the Cavaliers, and landed more three-pointers, which gave them an additional leg up against the Cavaliers.

Wildcats player Lucy Olsen was not only the top scorer on her team, but the highest scorer across both teams. Olsen’s 30-point total well exceeded the highest individual score for the Cavaliers, which was obtained by player Camryn Taylor with a total of 12 points.

If they had won, the Cavaliers would have secured back-to-back postseason victories for the first time since 2016.
