RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Board of Visitors voted Friday to approve a project that is expected to provide housing for 1,000 to 1,250 students in the coming years.
According to a VCU spokesperson, the board voted Friday, March 22, to authorize adding the project to the university’s Six-Year Capital Plan. The building will have more than 1,000 semi-suite and apartment-style units for undergraduate students.
VCU welcomed more than 4,500 freshmen this year but is dealing with an ongoing shortage of housing, partly due to the temporary closure of Johnson Hall on the university’s Monroe Park Campus in 2021 due to “elevated mold levels” inside the building.
In the meantime, VCU has had to find temporary accommodations for its undergraduate students, which has included housing 80 students at the Graduate Hotel, located near Monroe Park on West Franklin Street.
The exact size and scope of the project is yet to be finalized.
