DAYTON, Ohio (WRIC) — After a 67-42 loss to the Colorado State University Rams, the University of Virginia Cavaliers Men’s Basketball team has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers, who shot just 14 for 56 from the field Tuesday night, came into the First Four matchup with the third-best defense in Division I basketball, as well as the third-best assist-turnover ratio and second-fewest turnovers in Division I.
Despite an impressive season which earned the team an at-large bid in the tournament, the Cavaliers could not keep up against the Rams with senior guard Isaiah Stevens, who came into the game with the third-most total assists, the sixth-most assists per game and 22nd-highest individual assist-turnover ratio in Division I.
Stevens finished the game with five points, six assists and four rebounds. Forward Joel Scott led the Rams in scoring with 23 points, he also had 11 rebounds.
Cavaliers guard Reece Meekman led the team in scoring with 15 points, he also had four assists and three rebounds.
This year was the Cavaliers’ 12th straight appearance in the tournament. James Madison University is the only team from Virginia still in the men’s tournament, they play against Wisconsin on Friday, March 22.
