RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia in Richmond has just opened two new exhibitions, both of which highlight the tradition of ceramics as an artistic medium and will be on display through this summer.
The first exhibition coincides with the 58th Annual Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, which is currently taking place in Richmond. The works are of varying sizes but all follow the conference’s theme, “Coalescence.”
Clay as an artistic medium has been used by countless cultures throughout history, including during the African diaspora. According to the museum, the exhibition will provide insight into the tradition of ceramics for new audiences.
The second exhibition, called “Like the Dust Settles in Layers, So Does the Story,” is another collection of ceramics organized by University of North Carolina Professor Lydia C. Thompson.
According to the museum, this exhibition “invites viewers to challenge stereotypes related to communities, environments, race, economics, and societal roles, focusing on the themes of self-reflection, strength, and the beauty of resilience during challenging times.”
