Two “college-aged” people were injured as they tried to get away from their car, which had stalled on train tracks near the University of Delaware early Saturday morning. Just as they were getting out, the car was hit by a CSX freight train, according to Newark police.
The victims were both taken to Christiana Hospital with “serious and life-threatening injuries,” police said.
Police said the car was traveling south on New London Road – the wrong direction on the one-way street. The car then turned right onto the railroad tracks near West Main Street and got stuck. Everyone left the car and, “almost immediately,” a CSX train heading east hit the car, according to police.

Two of the people were still close to the car when the train hit it around 2:15 a.m.
Newark Police Department spokesman Sgt. Josep Conover later said that the two people injured were “college-aged,” but did not say whether they were students at UD. He also said the cause of the crash is “still under investigation.”
