Train collides with vehicle stuck on railway track in Newark


A train crashed into a vehicle that had gotten stuck on the railway track at the West Main Street and New London Avenue railroad crossing Wednesday evening.

The car was driving on West Main Street towards South Main Street when the driver made a right turn and got stuck on the track. 

“We were just following the map and it said to make a turn so we turned and we got stuck,” said the driver, who remained at the scene but did not want to be publicly identified. 

A train collided with a vehicle that had gotten stuck on a railroad track in Newark on Wednesday evening.

According to the driver, a police vehicle was nearby and the officers tried to move the car off the track but were unsuccessful. 

They eventually asked the three people inside the car, including a 9-year-old, to quickly get out of the vehicle as the train was approaching, the driver said.

The train struck the front of the car, pushing the vehicle off the track before coming to a halt a few meters ahead. 

Newark Police Department are investigating a crash involving a train striking a vehicle, the police said on Wednesday evening.

The train is not blocking the crossing at this time, according to the police, but there will be “intermittent lane closures,” police said. 

The crash remains under investigation by Newark police.
