PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Thick black smoke erupted from the OYO Hotel in Petersburg Tuesday afternoon.
8News viewer Michael Powers sent in a video and photo from the hotel, located at 25 S. Crater Road. The video shows smoke rolling from the hotel, with firetruck sirens blaring in the background. The fire department arrived at the hotel at 5 and had the fire marked under control by 5:17 p.m.
According to the Petersburg fire department, the structural fire damage was contained to one room, but smoke and heat damage spread across multiple rooms. One section of the building was isolated for electrical and fire hazards.
Dustin Mooney, who has been staying at the hotel since Sunday said the fire was pretty bad and he’s not certain if he will stay there again.
“The fire was so bad it blew the window out,” Mooney said. “From the second I got here there’s been some little problems here and there but I’ve been ok with it.”
The fire department said that one person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported. An unknown amount of people were displaced, and fire officials are working with management to address those displaced.
The fire department remained on the scene surveying and making sure the fire was completely extinguished.
