Oklahoma City residents are unhappy about a new development being built in their area.
An online petition has gained some support in The Village after neighbors were notified that commercial buildings could be built right outside of their front doors.
There is a chance the area could be turned into commercial property, which has left neighbors unhappy.
“We found out last Friday we got a letter in the mail,” said Matt Bhella, the writer of the petition.
Bhella and his wife moved into their home off May Avenue about a year ago. They don’t want the nearby property to be used for commercial buildings.
“They’re planning on rezoning it from single-family residential homes to multistory commercial property,” Bhella said.
An online petition has been signed by a handful of Village residents who feel the same way.
“The plan right now is to put the parking lot for the whole thing on our front doorstep,” Bhella said.
Bhella said those who signed the petition have reached out to him and said they are worried about their own streets too.
“I think one of the big concerns is that if this gets approved right here, they could do the same thing up and down May and we won’t be the only ones affected,” Bhella said.
KOCO 5 reached out to the developer, and he said if the zone change goes through, he would look at building commercial office buildings. He said he is not forcing anyone off the property any time soon and will work with the current tenants until they find a new house.
