Sussex County fires cause heavy damage and no injuries Saturday night


A pair of fires near Millsboro and in Dewey Beach heavily damaged a multi-family residential building and a garage with no injuries reported on Saturday night, officials said. 

The Dewey Beach blaze was reported shortly before 8 p.m. and occurred in the 1700 block of Bayard Ave. Fire damage to the three-story residential building was estimated at $75,000, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael G. Chionchio.

Firefighters from Rehoboth Beach assisted by Lewes and Bethany Beach responded to a residential fire in Dewey Beach on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company along with neighboring mutual aid fire companies battled the fire for over two hours.

Near Millsboro, several fire companies responded to a garage fire that occurred at 25000 Guinea Hollow Road near Friendship Road at around 8:15 p.m. The fire damaged the garage and was nearing the attached house when firefighters arrived. 

Fire damage was estimated at $80,000, Chionchio said. Both blazes remain under investigation.
