Suspect arrested after one woman killed, one hospitalized in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A woman is dead and another woman is in the hospital after a “domestic-related incident” in a home near Colonial Heights in South Chesterfield, according to police.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, officers responded to a house on the 19200 block of Brevard Drive at around 5:47 a.m. on Friday, May 26 after a woman who lived in the home arrived at a Prince George County emergency room with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries and later died.

The woman who died has been identified as 33-year-old Davina C. Bishop.

When they got to the house, the responding officers found another woman, who had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say it was determined that the two women were injured in a “domestic-related incident” in the home and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

According to Chesterfield Police, 37-year-old Mikal W. Lawton of the 19200 block of Brevard Drive, has been arrested and charged with malicious wounding and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being help at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.

Latasha Anderson couldn’t believe it when she heard that one of her neighbors on Brevard Drive had died.

“Just hearing and seeing it, but this is a surprise, it really is a surprise,” Anderson said. “It’s been taped off. And the detectives and everybody been up there. I guess trying to piece together on what’s really going on.”

Hailey Doss, a new addition to the neighborhood, is still processing the news.

“It’s crazy that we didn’t see anything because we were waking up around that time,” Doss said. “Definitely shocked, because you know, we didn’t hear anything. And then just to find out especially just a week after we moved in is definitely not the greatest feeling.”

Neighbors also told 8News that several children live in the home where the incident took place.

“It’s sad and it’s tragic and to have something so senseless happen,” Anderson said. “Could have found a different way to go about whatever was going on.”

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call Chesterfield Police at 804-748-1251.
