Sprouts Farmers Market is planning to open a store in Middletown accompanying Target in a new shopping center.
A company spokesperson said Sprouts plans to open the store in the second quarter of 2025. It will be in the new Northside Shopping Center along Middletown Warwick Road just south of Ash Boulevard.
The natural foods grocer opened its first Delaware store in March 2020 next to the Concord Mall on Concord Pike. The company shies from selling nationally known food and drink brands and is instead focused on organic options and products from its own label. A Sprouts spokesperson previously described the store as a “starter” for those looking to adopt healthy eating habits. There are almost 400 Sprouts locations nationwide.

The Middletown store along with Target will anchor one of the town’s premier retail centers. The site is north of Main Street and the Westown development, which has been at the heart of Middletown’s commercial growth. Northside currently has a Popeye’s, Burger King and a small retail strip. A Dash-In gas station and convenience store is nearly complete.
Target is planning to open next summer. Middletown granted approval to the Minnesota company last fall. The rest of the property has been split into separate parcels that will each go through the town’s approval process on their own. Sprouts has yet to enter the process. Two land development projects related to Northside Shopping Center are on the agenda for the Middletown Planning & Zoning Commission’s July 20 meeting.
Sprouts will join an already crowded grocery market. Its competitors along and near Route 299 will include Giant, Acme, Walmart, Lidl, Aldi and Food Lion.
Weis Markets announced plans in May to open a large store in the Bayberry Town Center between Boyds Corner and Jamison Corner roads. It is the first grocer to target the area just north of Middletown.
The following restaurants also have plans to come to Middletown.
- Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a growing fast-casual restaurant chain, is planning to build its first Delaware location at 601 S. Ridge Ave. near the Westown Kohl’s. The project has been before Town Council and the planning commission, but still needs final record plan approval.
- A Pat’s Select restaurant is planned for 399 E. Main St.
- Taco Reho is taking over the former Steak ‘n Shake off Middletown Warwick Road. It is projected to open in September, according to a Facebook post.
- Chili’s and Outback Steakhouse are part of a new development off Middletown Warwick Road next to Hedgelawn Plaza.
