A 68-year-old Lewes woman died in a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware State Police said.
The woman was driving a 2019 BMW 300 sedan south on Coastal Highway between the downtown Rehoboth Beach exit and the bridge to Dewey Beach.
For unknown reasons, the driver exited the southbound lanes and entered the northbound lanes before crossing the Bay Vista Road intersection and going off the east edge of the roadway.
The car then struck a curb and numerous Delaware Department of Transportation signs while continuing south off Coastal Highway. The BMW then struck a steel handrail, went down an embankment and struck a small tree.
Rehoboth Fire and EMS units arrived and found the car up against a fence in the parking lot of a business just off Coastal Highway, according to a release from the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company.
The woman was the only occupant in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.
The roadway was closed for about 2 1/2 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway cleared.
