The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case involving two dogs that were found dead in rural Cumberland on Tuesday. They were found dead near a bridge on 660th Street, close to Tucson Road, the sheriff’s office reported.Officials say the rear legs of the dogs had been bound and they were shot in the head.Bella, a not even 2-year-old Pitbull, and Pepper, a 3-year-old black lab, been missing since July 27.”Bella loved to cuddle — that was her biggest thing,” owner Logan Lank said. “Pepper was really good. Obedient. Kind of like a sister to Bella.”Lank and his girlfriend have set up a grave site for Bella and Pepper.”All we had were these bricks and we tried carving their names in for now,” Lank said.They are desperate to find out what had happened to their dogs after they went missing.”The community was a big help. They were all searching. We had people from everywhere looking for them,” Lank said.What started as a hopeful search, ended in pain on Tuesday.”They were found with their legs tied up, shot in the back of the head, thrown over the bridge,” Lank said.The bridge was just two miles away from Logan’s home.”You can’t just dispose of a dog like that without the law jumping in,” Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren said.McLaren says whoever did this could face animal cruelty charges. He believes, based on pictures, that Bella and Pepper were killed around July 27.”Right now, we’re thinking this is a random act. I do not think someone is going around and shooting stray dogs,” McLaren said.Lank wants to know who did this to bring justice to his dogs.”I just want them to know how inhuman and barbaric they are. But, I figured they should already know that doing something like that,” Lank said. What gives Lank a sense of calm after the loss of his dogs is knowing that they were together until the end.”That does bring peace to my heart that they weren’t separated. It’s still, either way, gonna be hard,” Lank said.Logan says the community has donated money for a reward for any information that would lead to an arrest.The sheriff’s office continues to investigate.
