Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Richmond, Central Virginia localities

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for a number of localities in Central Virginia and the metro Richmond area.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in the following areas:

  • City of Richmond
  • City of Petersburg
  • City of Hopewell
  • City of Colonial Heights
  • Henrico County
  • Chesterfield County
  • Hanover County
  • New Kent County
  • Prince George County
  • King and Queen County
  • King William County
  • Charles City County

Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, as well as quarter-sized hailstones, are possible in the affected areas. Continuous cloud-to-ground lighting is occurring within these storms.

Residents are asked to seek shelter in a basement or interior room of a building.

The severe thunderstorm warning will remain in place until 8 p.m. unless it is extended.
