The Emmys are back and this year, the competition is fierce and historic.
“Succession,” the HBO drama centering on the dysfunctional Roy family’s fight for corporate power, is a clear frontrunner at the 74th Emmy Awards, with 25 nominations – the most of any show this year. Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso” and HBO’s limited-series satire “The White Lotus” trail closely behind with 20 nominations apiece.
On the comedy front, newcomer “Abbott Elementary” goes toe to toe with veteran series “Lasso,” “Hacks,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The show’s creator Quinta Brunson is also up for best lead actress in a comedy and best writing for a comedy series, making her the first Black woman to earn three nominations in comedy categories in the same year.
A number of A-list stars, including Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”) and Oscar Isaac (“Scenes from a Marriage”), are gunning for their first Emmy in an acting category. The late Chadwick Boseman and Norm Macdonald both received posthumous nominations for their most recent work, marking the actors’ first Emmy nods (Boseman won for outstanding character voice-over performance.)
Check back here throughout the night to see which nominees clinched a gold statuette.
