More than a dozen children and at least one adult were injured Monday morning in a crash between an SUV and a school bus near New Castle, according to New Castle County Paramedics.
Emergency personnel were called to West Commons Boulevard and Reads Way just after 8:15 a.m. for reports of the wreck. It was initially reported that several students and one adult were injured, though emergency radio communications indicated there was a second adult patient, as well.
When first responders arrived, radio communications say they found additional children injured. In total, 14 children suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to initial reports from first responders.
New Castle County Paramedics Senior Sgt. Abigail Haas said while paramedics responded to the scene, the injuries were minor enough that their advanced life support services were not needed.
New Castle County Police are in the early stages of investigating the crash. Photos and video from the scene show a Ford SUV with significant damage to its front bumper parked next to the school bus.
Children could be seen being walked off the bus by firefighters. They were later taken to a local hospital, according to radio communications.
