Saudi Arabia has announced plans to construct a theme park dedicated to Japan’s iconic “Dragon Ball” manga franchise within the prestigious Qiddiya tourist destination near Riyadh. The announcement follows the recent passing of the series’ creator, Akira Toriyama, at age 68, leaving fans worldwide in mourning.
Spanning an expansive 500,000 square metres (125 acres), the park promises to immerse fans in the beloved saga, offering an interactive journey from the original “Dragon Ball” series to the latest installment, “Dragon Ball Super.” The initiative, spearheaded by the Qiddiya Investment Company, aims to encapsulate the essence of the franchise’s adventures, as reported by AFP.
Thrilling attractions
Anticipated to feature over 30 rides, the park is set to captivate visitors with exhilarating experiences inspired by the legendary manga. Among its highlights will be a towering 70-metre dragon, serving as the centerpiece of the attraction, symbolising the iconic dragon balls central to the series’ plot.
Since its serialisation debut in 1984, “Dragon Ball” has transcended borders to become one of the highest-grossing manga franchises globally, spawning many anime adaptations, films, and video games.
While the official opening date of the park remains undisclosed, Qiddiya authorities envision the project as a testament to Toriyama’s enduring legacy. The park will be structured into seven distinct zones, each reflecting the enchanting allure of the mystical dragon balls pivotal to the series’ narrative.
The “Dragon Ball” theme park is set to be an integral component of the expansive Qiddiya “entertainment city” project, which aims to redefine leisure experiences in the region.
