RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond City Public Schools will cancel classes Wednesday in the wake of a mass shooting outside the Altria Theater on Tuesday, according to school board member Jonathan Young. Graduations have also been cancelled for the rest of the week and will be rescheduled.
The shooting took place after Huguenot High School’s graduation at the Altria Theater, which was slated to begin at 4 p.m.
According to 8News sources, two people were killed and at least 13 were injured. But Richmond police did not confirm any fatalities during a briefing outside the theater by Interim Police Chief Rick Edwards.
Richmond police tweeted that officers are on the scene of a shooting at Laurel Street and Franklin Street. According to police, multiple injuries were reported and there is “no immediate threat to the public.”
All Richmond high school graduations this week have also been canceled. Richmond Public Schools has announced that these graduations will take place next week instead, and will provide further details soon.
The shooting could impact traffic for Douglas Freeman High School’s graduation, which is taking place at the Siegel Center, according to Henrico County Public Schools.
