RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A celebrated pastor was honored Friday with a street sign in front of his church in Richmond’s Union Hill neighborhood.
For more than 50 years, Bishop Melvin Williams, Jr. has served the community as the pastor at Temple of Judah, located at the intersection of Venable Street and North 22nd Street in Union Hill.
On the morning of Friday, March 15, dozens gathered in front of the church as a street sign marking “Honorary Melvin Williams, Jr. Way” was unveiled. The sign can be seen across the street from the church on the 2100 block of Venable Street.
Williams said it has always been his duty to help those who need it most.
“When you stand on the outside and you fulfill what God called us to do, to go into the world and to preach the gospel to every creature — it’s no longer a denomination, it’s a people,” said Williams as he addressed the crowd Friday. “And God loves everybody, God help me to love who I thought I could not love.”
