Richmond Fire crews respond to James River after green liquid found, determined to be non-toxic

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Fire Department Crews responded to the James River on Monday afternoon after a mysterious green liquid was found in the water, but found no threat to local waterways or drinking water supply.

According to Richmond Fire, crews responded to a report of possible hazardous materials in the James River near the 100 block of Manchester Road after a maintenance worker reported seeing a green substance coming from a sewage drain near the Southside floodwall.

The substance was tested by the fire department and it was determined to be green dye which was being used as part of an effort to kill weeds on private property. The green dye was determined to have posed no threat to local waterways or drinking supply.
