The first part of the final season of “Grown-ish” is coming your way this week on June 28 on Freeform. The show has been approved for a sixth season, with the first half to premiere this summer, and the second half to come early 2024.
The spinoff of ABC’s “Black-ish” sitcoms has followed the lives of the younger members of the Johnson family as they navigate leaving home and college life. For the first four seasons, we’ve watched Zoey (Yara Shahidi) attend a fictional California university and forge her own path. The most recent season followed Andre Junior (Marcus Scribner) and his college career.
The number of episodes has yet to be released, but Shahidi said the final season will include the 100th episode of the season, a rare feat for a TV show today, as TV seasons become shorter. This means we can expect at least 13 more episodes of “Grown-ish,” as the season already has 87 episodes.
‘ish’ universe comes to an end
“Grown–ish” ending means the entire “ish” universe, which includes “Black-ish,” “Grown-ish” and “Mixed-ish,” started in 2014 by Kenya Barris and has won a collective total of 74 Primetime Emmy wins & 265 nominations.
“Black-ish” and its spinoffs have tackled a number of social issues, ranging from police brutality, feminism, colorism and the importance of celebrating Juneteenth, through its comedic style that endeared the shows to audiences.
In a promotion video for the final season, Shahidi expressed her gratitude for the all the supporters of the show.
“It has been such an honor to play Zoey and grow up alongside her for the last nine years,” said Shahidi, who played oldest daughter Zoey in “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish.” “We want to take the time to thank you all for the love and support that has kept us going.”
‘Grown-ish’ cast
Show stars Shahidi and Scribner will return for the final season. A show cast has yet to be confirmed, but it’s expected that season five regulars Trevor Jackson’s Aaron, and Diggy Simmons’ Doug will reappear, as well as stars from earlier seasons.
In a teaser video, Shahidi hinted at some big name guest stars, including Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals and Lil Yachty, with more announcements to come.
