After avoiding a nasty spill on a skateboard while on stage, rapper Soulja Boy might play it safe when he brings his “Soulja World” tour to The Queen in Wilmington on Sunday, Sept. 3.
Soulja Boy, nicknamed Draco, is trending after he uploaded a video to his YouTube channel Sunday that featured him nearly falling off a skateboard on stage.
Soulja’s cat-like reflexes kept him from wiping out as he quickly and smoothly transitioned into pumping up his army of screaming fans.
Soulja Boy fans react to skateboard slip
Fans roasted him and showed him love in the YouTube comments.
“FIRST RAPPER TO FALL OFF A SKATE BOARD,” a jokester wrote before adding, “Lil wayne has left the chat.”
“That boy was sturdy wit it,” a commenter said. “Soulja too lit,” another person said.
“Soulja Boy I want to met u,” a thirsty fan wrote.
How much are Soulja Boy tickets?
Soulja Boy’s concert tickets at The Queen are on sale for $23 to $77-plus. Fans can score tickets at thequeenwilmington.com.
Soulja Boy is a YouTube rap pioneer
The rapper, now in his 30s, has released a number of big songs over the last 15 years like “Kiss Me Thru the Phone,” “Turn My Swag On,” “BTBT” and “Pretty Boy Swag.”
He’s best known for dropping the mega hit “Crank That” in 2007, which took the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song included a dance that broke the internet at the time, inspiring a bunch of copycats to create offshoot dances where they cranked their moves to countless characters in pop culture like Robocop, Spiderman, Megaman and the Lion King.
Soulja Boy has cemented himself as one of the most influential rappers of the YouTube era. “Crank That” has generated 557 million views on his YouTube account alone.
Becoming a popular rap meme
The artist also has inspired a bunch of memes and has become a target for comedians, which has helped his popularity.
In 2019, Chris Redd’s rendition of Soulja Boy appeared as a presidential candidate on “Saturday Night Live” and he announced his campaign slogan was “Soulja Boy Crank That 2020.”
“Weekend Update” co-host Michael Che spoke to Soulja Boy (Redd) about the government shutdown. Soulja used that opportunity to brag about his knockoff video game endeavors.
Additionally, he pronounced Donald Trump with an exaggerated “Truuuummmpppp,” a nod to Soulja’s famous 2019 interview with the Breakfast Club that became a meme.
Long story short, in that interview Soulja claimed he was the 2018 comeback artist of the year. He also made other claims and tickled the internet when he addressed artists Tyga and Drake by name with an elongated pronunciation like in the “SNL” skit.
Soulja is a meme machine that will likely inspire another one if he tries a skateboard stunt at The Queen next month and falls off.
The Queen (500 N. Market St., Wilmington) at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3. Tickets start at $23. Visit thequeenwilmington.com or (302) 400-7020.
