Police: Man shot, killed by Richmond police officer during early morning call

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A man is dead after being shot by an officer with the Richmond Police Department during an early morning call on Sunday.

According to the department, just before 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, officers responded to the 1900 block of Cedar Street for report of a disturbance with an armed person.

When officers arrived, they found the adult male suspect, who has not yet been identified.

According to the department, the man pulled out a gun and an officer shot him. 8News reached out to Richmond Police to find out how many times he was shot and were told “this is an ongoing investigation” by a department spokesperson.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police reportedly recovered a firearm at the scene.

According to the department, the unidentified involved officer was placed on administrative leave. The spokesperson told 8News this leave is paid.

No other information is available at this time, but the department said it will share updates when possible.
