GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The vehicle of a Goochland County Sheriff’s Office deputy was struck while that deputy performed a traffic stop.
According to a March 7 Facebook post from the sheriff’s office, the deputy had initiated an evening traffic stop. The deputy’s vehicle was stopped to the far right of the roadway.
An approaching vehicle did not move far enough over, according to the office, resulting in the driver hitting the deputy’s vehicle. The impact caused substantial damage to the back left side of the car.
There were no reported injuries.
Virginia law requires drivers to move over or reduce speed when approaching emergency personnel vehicles on the shoulder, including police and EMS.
“Please take this incident as a visual reminder of what can happen when emergency vehicles are not given sufficient space,” the office wrote in its post. “Safety is always our first priority; let’s all do our part to ensure it!”
