Police: 45-year-old motorcyclist killed while trying to flee Sussex County deputy

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State Police are investigating after a 45-year-old motorcyclist was killed during a traffic pursuit in Sussex County.

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, state troopers were called to a section of Rolfe Highway for a reported motorcycle crash.

According to police, a Sussex County Sheriff’s Office deputy witnessed the driver of a 2014 Aprilia motorcycle driving on Rolfe Highway without registration.

The deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist — later identified as 45-year-old James Charles Farey of Elberon — reportedly drove away at high speed.

“As Farey fled the scene, he lost control of the motorcycle, ran off the roadway striking a ditch, causing the motorcycle and Farey to become airborne, landing inside a wooded area,” a Virginia State Police spokesperson said. “Farey died upon impact.”

Virginia State Police is continuing to investigate the crash.
