RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As is tradition for both the City of Richmond and 8News, Richmond’s holiday lights will be turned on during RVA Illuminates, kicking of the holiday season.
Live coverage for the event begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1 and we’ll be “flipping the switch” to light the skyline at 6 p.m.

6 p.m.
The city’s skyline was finally illuminated at 6 p.m. by Mayor Lavar Stoney, with an unexpected visitor shortly thereafter!
The Grinch made an appearance, attempting to steal Christmas, but his small heart was no match for the bright, festive spirit of Richmond.
5:30 p.m.
As the evening goes on, the anticipation grows before the “flipping of the switch” to light the city’s skyline.
8News crews and guests are enjoying the night’s festivities before the time comes when the skyline is set aglow.

Guests are enjoying live music performances at Kanawha Plaza, with memorable holiday classics, as well as food from food trucks.
4 p.m.
Live coverage for RVA Illuminates has begun! News anchors Deanna Allbrittin and Eric Philips, and meteorologist Matt Dinardo can be seen in their most festive holiday attire while bringing you the latest updates.

The 8News team huddled at a tent near Kanawha Plaza to discuss the plan for the evening. Despite the light showers, spirits have been high and excitement is in the air for our brightest event of the year!
