A 53-year-old Philadelphia man was struck and killed by an SUV while walking along Route 40 after leaving a car Sunday night, according to Delaware State Police.
The Philadelphia man, whose identity is being withheld until relatives have been notified, got out of a vehicle at 9:33 p.m. on the right shoulder of westbound Route 40 near Scotland Drive in Bear, according to State Police.
He began walking east against traffic along the shoulder and one of the oncoming lanes when he was struck by a 2020 Kia Sportage, police said. The westbound SUV struck the pedestrian in the left lane and the driver stopped on the side of the road, police said.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Route 40 westbound at Salem Church Road was closed for almost three hours while the incident was investigated. According to troopers, the area was dark and not well lit and the victim was wearing dark-colored clothing.
