PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Each year Punxsutawney Phil predicts whether there will there be six more weeks of winter or early spring when he emerges from Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Day.
It’s official, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow! This means spring is expected to come early in 2024.

- Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President, Tom Dunkel estimated over 35,000 people and as many as 40,000 attended this year’s event.
- Governor Josh Shapiro named Phil the “Official meteorologist of Pennsylvania.”
In 2023, Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter. It was the 108th time Phil as seen his shadow since the tradition began in 1887.

The festivities exploded worldwide after the release of ‘Groundhog Day’ starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell in 1993. The event would see around 5,000 people attending yearly to now up to 35,000 people every year since the movie debuted 31 years ago.
