Petersburg restaurant Croaker’s Spot to be featured on America’s Best Restaurant

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — Local Petersburg restaurant Croaker’s Spot will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants in late February.

The America’s Best Restaurants Roadshow will make its way to Croaker’s Spot in Petersburg to highlight popular dishes and interview owners Sherita McGowan and Leroy Royal about the restaurant’s impact in the community.

Croaker’s Spot restaurant is named after Richmond native Mr. Croaker, who was a friend of jazz musicians, artists and creative entrepreneurs he met while traveling through the east coast during the early 20th century.

The first Croaker’s restaurant was established in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance era, and was frequented by Mr. Croaker’s friends in the creatives arts.

Croaker’s Spot came to Richmond in 2001, and has been a staple to the community ever since. After the restaurant gained popularity, it opened another location in Petersburg in 2013.

McGowan started as a hostess at the original restaurant in Richmond nearly 20 years ago and took ownership after the original owner wanted to sell the restaurant.

Croaker’s Spot is most known for its “southern soul food seafood cuisine” and serves seafood and chicken only. Top sellers at the restaurant include the Fish Boat, Po’boys, seafood platters and pasta.

America’s Best Restaurant will film at the Petersburg location on Friday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The episode will be announced and aired on social media platforms at a later date on America’s Best Restaurant’s website.
