A passenger was killed and the driver injured in a one-car crash on Mount Joy Road in Millsboro Wednesday afternoon.
A 27-year-old Milford man was driving a Kia Optima east on Mount Joy Road around 3:15 p.m., approaching a “moderate” curve east of Cannon Road, according to Delaware State Police. He failed to negotiate the curve and went off the south side of the road, striking a utility pole. The car overturned onto its roof and caught fire.
The driver was not properly restrained and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The passenger “sustained extensive thermal injuries,” police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s body was turned over to the state Office of the Medical Examiner to confirm their identity.
The identity of the driver was not released.
Mount Joy Road was closed for about three-and-a-half hours.
