Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset, Dorchester, Accomack and Northampton counties are under a tornado watch through 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
All three Delaware counties, as well as Maryland’s Kent, Talbot, Queen Anne’s and Caroline counties, are under a severe thunderstorm watch through 7 p.m.
A “watch” means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and/or severe thunderstorms in the area. Throughout Delmarva, “a few tornadoes are possible,” according to the weather service, and scattered, damaging wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour.
“Damaging winds will be the primary threat with bowing segments, though a tornado or two may also occur,” the service said.
Bowers, Frederica and Magnolia in Kent County, Delaware were under a tornado warning between 2:20 and 2:45 p.m. Friday afternoon.
According to the weather service, “a broken band of storms” will travel east and northeast Friday afternoon with “additional storm development” expected.
Those under a tornado watch should review and discuss emergency plans and check supplies and safe rooms, the National Weather Service recommends, and be ready to act quickly if a tornado warning, which indicates a tornado is imminent, is issued.
