HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An unusual police crash involving a cement truck that stretched from Richmond to Henrico ended with an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Henrico Police, Richmond Police officers first tried to stop a cement truck that was in the City on Tuesday, May 2. Then, a chase between the truck and officers began.
Henrico Police joined the chase just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday before it ended in a crash at Deanne and Rodney Roads in west Henrico. Then, police say Richmond officers shot at the man who was driving the truck.
The cement truck driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
No officers were injured.
The Richmond Police Officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as the department investigates the shooting. Henrico Police are still working to learn how many shots were fired and who fired first.
Two Richmond Police cars were also significantly damaged in the crash.
Neighbors who witnessed the high speed chase couldn’t believe it. Jeff Strange said his wife called to tell him what she’d just seen in their Henrico neighborhood.
Moments later, he arrived home to a cement truck buried in the trees on the side of the road and two damaged Richmond Police cars.
“(She said) That a cement truck just drove by at like 70 miles an hour and a bunch of police cars following,” Strange said. “It’s frightening. The crazy thing is that 24 hours ago my wife and I were there looking at the book boxes, just looking at the books.”
Strange says he is thankful no residents were injured along the way, especially because the crash happened so close to a bus stop.
“Stuff like this shouldn’t happen where I’m at. You know, we all think like that and then this is evident that, well that’s not true, it can happen anywhere at any time,” Strange said.
Both Henrico and Richmond officers remained on scene for most of the evening after the crash took place.
