Newark Police Chief Paul Tiernan is retiring from the agency he’s headed for more than 15 years.
The 64-year-old’s s departure is effective Jan. 31.
Tiernan could not be reached for comment Thursday. A response email said he was out of the office.
Word of this retirement was made public Thursday morning in a four-paragraph press release that highlighted his accomplishments while serving as Newark’s top cop. The release also gave background on how he came up the ranks in New Jersey’s Teaneck Police Department.
No comment was provided by Newark officials on the release, but the city’s spokesperson commented when reached by Delaware Online/The News Journal.
“He left on his own terms. In good standing,” Jayme Gravell said.
Tiernan’s departure came the same day Wilmington announced they hired a longtime officer to replace their police chief who is headed to Missouri after being selected as St. Louis’ next police commissioner.
