RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A 14-year-old boy died at the hospital after he was found lying in the road after being shot, according to the Richmond Police Department.
Officers found the boy lying in the road with a gunshot wound near 4th Avenue and Front Street at 10:54 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Neighbor Raini Jones said the news hits too close to home, while others are calling the incident shocking considering how quiet the area normally is.
“Why is a 14-year-old involved in anything that involves a gun, and who killed a 14-year-old,” said Jones. “Somebody lost their child.”
8News spoke with a neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. They said it’s their first time hearing something like this in the area and said knowing that it happened a couple of blocks from their home is concerning.
“We see teenagers on their dirt bikes driving around,” the neighbor said. “We just see neighbors walking around, so it’s very hard to hear when something like that happens so close, because you don’t know if that’s personal or if that’s an immediate threat to you in this neighborhood.”
The neighbor said they would like to see more neighbors looking out for one another.
“There’s just limited interactions with people in this neighborhood unless you’re right across the street from them,” they said. “People are really, really friendly and like, we’ll just say, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’”
Jones said he’s hoping the family of the victim can find peace.
“I just hope they can find who did it, because it happens way too often and it seems like it’s happening more often,” Jones said.
The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. Officers are still investigating the incident.
