CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Neighbors are in shock after three people were hurt during a two-alarm fire that destroyed a home in Chesterfield County.
The fire happened on the 5600 block of Drayton Landing Court in the Chester area at around 6:49 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 16. Tisha Smith, who lives in the neighborhood, said she heard voices around 6:50 a.m., looked out her window and saw two men carrying another man across the street. She then realized the man being lifted was her neighbor — whose home was engulfed in flames.
“It was so intense,” Smith said. “I can’t describe it. It was just horrific. All I could think of, [once] I knew they were out of the home safely, was all the memories that they have in the house.”
Carina Gonzalez, another neighbor, said she awoke to what could only be described as orange lighting from outside her window. She immediately got her parents to see what was happening.
“My mom was the one that went to check on the wife and on both of them,” Gonzalez said. “Then, she came inside and asked for a blanket because the poor woman, who was barefoot, was freezing. So we got her a blanket and then she brought her to the house”
Gonzalez said that, despite not knowing them well, she and others in the area look out for one another and are hoping that the family can recover from this ordeal.
“I’m just really glad and thankful that they’re safe, that they’re away from this fire and that they have a place to go to and that they’re not in a homeless situation right now,” Gonzalez said.
Three people who lived inside the home were transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
